Introduction

Welcome to the world of digital photography. As we enter the third century of photography the era of digital images is having a dramatic effect on photography. The annual film costs for a local hospital went from $220,000 in 2001 to $6,000 in 2002. The room used for film archives has been converted to a staff room. It was estimated that Australians would buy 300,000 digital cameras in 2003. The number was revised in July to be close to one million units. Several US states have banned the use of photographic evidence in law enforcement. Photo labs are making more prints than ever, people are emailing photographs to every corner of the world via the internet and we even have mobile phones and ball-point pens with in-built digital cameras! Photography, as we knew it, has changed forever. In putting this course together I was motivated by changing what many people experience as a digital dilemma into a digital delight!
